Using Sophocles’ plot as the basis for his Oedipus complex, Freud argues that during the late infantile stage (somewhere between ages 3 and 6), all infant males have an erotic attachment to their mothers. The Oedipus complex, or Oedipal complex, is probably Freud’s most famous topic of study and is generally recognized in common society as belonging to Freud. This term is a derivative from the Greek play “ Oedipus Rex” written by Sophocles about an ancient Greek king, Oedipus , who made the climactic mistake of killing his father and marrying his mother whom he was deeply in love with. Hamlet and Oedipus is a study of William Shakespeare's Hamlet in which the title character's inexplicable behaviours are subjected to investigation along psychoanalytic lines. The study was written by Sigmund Freud's colleague and biographer Ernest Jones, following on from Freud's own comments on the play, as expressed to Wilhelm Fliess in 1897, before being published in Chapter V of The Interpretation of Dreams. Hamlet's character is a very complex one and many would say that he does, indeed, display characteristics of the Oedipus complex, when Hamlet is analyzed from within the critical framework of Freud and Hamlet (1838) Ernest Jones essay "The Oedipus Complex as an Explanation of Hamlet"s Mystery" was first published in The American Journal of Psychology in January of 1910. It was published in German the following year as a monogram, and then revised and expanded in 1923 when it appeared under the title "A Psycho-Analytic Study of The Oedipus-Complex as An Explanation of Hamlet's Mystery.
